Again the character is excellently played by the fifth doctor who peter davison, who exudes public school boyish charms here.he dithers and bumbles his way throughout the series, while at the core being an essential and perhaps strong character, he means well but never quite gets it. davison is one of britains finest character actors, again under-rated but looking now as if he will hit the big time after the success of at home with the braithwaites. all creatures great and small also has the benefit of some of the finest writers and directors having worked on the show, such as terence dudley and peter moffet, as well as the multi talanted and consistant head writer johnny byrne.

John-nathan turner sought to attract famous guest stars, and wanted a well-known actor to play the fifth doctor. previous doctors had been played by experienced character actors, whilst tom baker had been a virtual unknown. peter davison, already a television star in england, portrayed a much younger doctor in a cricket blazer, with more subtle humor and a touch of irascibility.

"logopolis" marked the end of an era. it was the last appearance of tom baker, the longest serving doctor in the history of "doctor who", and also the first of his successor peter davison who appears in the final regeneration scene. it also marked the arrival of two new companions aboard the tardis, janet fielding as the australian airline stewardess tegan jovanka and sarah sutton as the trakenian princess nyssa.

In 2014, tom baker turned 80 and continued to record new performances as the doctor for big finish productions' fourth doctor adventures audio dramas, making him the oldest actor to play the part in an officially licensed capacity. peter davison, colin baker, sylvester mccoy and paul mcgann, all in their sixties or seventies, also continue to portray the doctor in licensed audio dramas produced by big finish, with mcgann also appearing in audio dramas produced by big finish and bbc radio for broadcast on bbc7 radio. in the 2000s and 2010s, tom baker also portrayed the doctor in audiogo's hornets' nest, demon quest and serpent crest audio dramas.

Then we had patrick troughton, described as a 'cosmic hobo' he brought more humour into the series, and made it different enough and yet the same enough to work, following on from his predecessor william hartnell. the jon pertwee era was excellent, and was the time when the show's popularity increased even further. then came the longest running doctor ever, the fourth doctor tom baker, whose wit and humour entertained audiences across the globe for 7 years.
