Again the character is excellently played by the fifth doctor who peter davison, who exudes public school boyish charms here.he dithers and bumbles his way throughout the series, while at the core being an essential and perhaps strong character, he means well but never quite gets it. davison is one of britains finest character actors, again under-rated but looking now as if he will hit the big time after the success of at home with the braithwaites. all creatures great and small also has the benefit of some of the finest writers and directors having worked on the show, such as terence dudley and peter moffet, as well as the multi talanted and consistant head writer johnny byrne.

John-nathan turner sought to attract famous guest stars, and wanted a well-known actor to play the fifth doctor. previous doctors had been played by experienced character actors, whilst tom baker had been a virtual unknown. peter davison, already a television star in england, portrayed a much younger doctor in a cricket blazer, with more subtle humor and a touch of irascibility.

"logopolis" marked the end of an era. it was the last appearance of tom baker, the longest serving doctor in the history of "doctor who", and also the first of his successor peter davison who appears in the final regeneration scene. it also marked the arrival of two new companions aboard the tardis, janet fielding as the australian airline stewardess tegan jovanka and sarah sutton as the trakenian princess nyssa.

Christopher eccleston provides what may transpire to be the most intense doctor, although he plays second-fiddle to billie piper's unexpectedly well-acted rose – who effectively 'saves the day'. the superficial auton plot succeeds in introducing the protagonists, although the situations and scenarios are somewhat so-so. camille coduri and noel clarke's respective acting leaves much to be desired.

The number of deaths is quite surprising; particularly in the case of one character although he does 'recover'. having the doctor send rose away along with a message saying he didn't expect to survive worked well; it showed us just how far each of them was prepared to go to try to save the other. christopher eccleston was on fine form as the doctor; he may only have been in the series for one season but he was a fine first doctor for the new era of the show.

Christopher eccleston excels as the "good guy" on the bad side, a very stringer bell-esque character who takes a business approach to everything. the supporting cast all make huge impressions as well; rafe spall and stephen rea both create two of the most terrifying villains in recent memory. spall the livewire with his finger always on the trigger and rea the calm and mysterious shadow figure hiding behind the door.
