At school, billy saves freddy from bullies and is chased into a subway, where he is transported to the rock of eternity as shazam summoned billy to be the champion. by calling shazam's name, billy is transformed into an adult superhero, and the wizard turns to dust, leaving his staff behind. at home, freddy is taken into billy's confidence and helps billy explore his newfound powers: electricity manipulation, near-invulnerability, super strength, speed and flight.

Kyle maclachlan and laura dern are well cast as the small town "nice" kids who find themselves caught up in a mysterious and dangerous scene that exists right under their noses. dennis hopper ('easy rider'), long a legendary cult figure, is given one of the most memorable roles of his career as frank booth, still one of the most repellent movie villains ever seen. hopper was newly sober, and had spent a long time in "exile" from hollywood, and with 'blue velvet' he could not have asked for a more amazing opportunity for a comeback.
