Part of the "vampire renaissance" that took place in the '80's, fright night was one of three films that made vampires hip and chic with the teen set, (the lost boys and near dark were the other two.) it was also the brainchild of ingenious writer/director tom holland, who would also give the horror world a demented little "good guys" doll named chucky...charley brewster (william ragsdale) is a typical horny teen with two passions in life: getting to third base with his girlfriend amy (future married with children star amanda bearse) and watching the late night spook show fright night, hosted by former horror legend peter vincent, (roddy mcdowall in top form). wellll...make that three passions.

Spoilers, perhaps? wesley snipes stars as blade, a modern-day vampire hunter pulled from the pages of marvel comics' '70s schlock-o-rama title, `tomb of dracula.' he doesn't have the afro, the goggles or the orange trenchcoat, but nonetheless snipes' version would kick the s**t out of the marvel character!

Original story based on traditional vampire rules... excellent cast includes chris sarandon, william ragsdale, roddy mcdowall, amanda bearse and steven geoffreys.sarandon's portrayal of jerry dandrige is the most debonaire, sophisticated and articulate vampire-next-door ever seen on film, in my opinion. dandrige is an impeccably dressed, highly civilised apple eating vampire (in the early evening at least) who is dead keen to secretly "suck his way through the entire town".frustrated teen, charlie brewster (william ragsdale) stumbles across his neighbour's nocturnal activities by chance and although his friends refuse to believe it, his eventual all- too-close encounter with undead dandrige puts him on a mission to protect himself in any way he can.

He plans to summon the vampire blood god la magra and allow vampires to rise to their rightful place over the humans. blade is norrington's first major directing gig and he brings us a killer action/horror film to debut one of marvel's coolest characters.with few exceptions, the casting in this film was terrific. wesley snipes truly is blade; i can't think of any other actor that would've personified the character anywhere as well as snipes did.

It gets extra points for enlisting roddy mcdowall to play tv host / vampire hunter, peter vincent, and for a tremendous finale!long live practical effects!...
