Shang tsung, however, had no intention of fulfilling his end of the bargain and has her unit killed. after he is defeated by shaolin monk liu kang in the final battle, sonya teams up with movie star johnny cage and kano to fight off the shokan prince goro. during the battle, the island begins to crumble and she and kano are sent to outworld as shang tsung's prisoners to appease the outworld emperor, shao kahn.

Director paul w. s. anderson wanted liu kang's character to be "really engaging" and chose shou, noting his skills with martial arts. anderson compared shou with jackie chan due to how both actors did not rely on stunts for their movies and thus made his fight with reptile one of his favorites. in the first film, he takes part in the tournament out of guilt over his brother's death at the hands of shang tsung (portrayed by cary-hiroyuki tagawa), and defeats tsung in the final battle.
