I also think that gene wilder played a much better willy wonka than johnny depp. now, i am a huge johnny depp fan, and a tim burton fan. but i don't think this role was for him.

This, his latest effort, just falls flat for me.depp is creepy as willy wonka, and that's not really what i wanted. i could never get into the character at all.if this version of willy wonka had been the original, trust me it would not have became a beloved classic.there is simply no way that this movie will be remembered thirty plus years from now as the original one is today.

One of songs written for the film was the candy man which would become a standard for sammy davis jr.as good as johnny depp is as an actor; the role of willy wonka was handled more effectively by the very talented gene wilder. unfortunately the depp portrayal comes across as a bit too creepy.another aspect of the film where it exceeds the remake is the portrayal of the oompa loompa's. instead of eerie miniature digital recreations of a single actor we have a group of little people including at least one female, and most of whom could not speak english.
