The span from the premiere of the twin dilemma to his regeneration in the brink of death was approximately 31 years. paul mcgann was notionally the longest-serving incumbent in the role, as he debuted in may 1996 and christopher eccleston's premiere didn't happen until march 2005. being very generous, therefore, mcgann was the "current doctor" for a total of 8 years and 10 months.

This past series has unbelievable. i had only seen christopher eccleston in two other features (those being "existenz and 28 days later") and he really made the ninth doctor his own. the only thing that really agitated me off about this series however, was the fact that there was no regeneration scene from paul mcgann to christopher eccleston.

For the reviewer who said that the webisode would be incomprehensible to modern fans, i'm not even a fan and i found it comprehensible. all you really need to know to appreciate it is that paul mcgann was the eighth doctor but only appeared in a tv movie back in 1996.because it's been seventeen years, he's made enough of a physical change for him to look as if he's been hardened or wisened by events. mcgann gets a much better change to acquit himself and remind everybody that he's a very good actor.

Again the character is excellently played by the fifth doctor who peter davison, who exudes public school boyish charms here.he dithers and bumbles his way throughout the series, while at the core being an essential and perhaps strong character, he means well but never quite gets it. davison is one of britains finest character actors, again under-rated but looking now as if he will hit the big time after the success of at home with the braithwaites. all creatures great and small also has the benefit of some of the finest writers and directors having worked on the show, such as terence dudley and peter moffet, as well as the multi talanted and consistant head writer johnny byrne.

John-nathan turner sought to attract famous guest stars, and wanted a well-known actor to play the fifth doctor. previous doctors had been played by experienced character actors, whilst tom baker had been a virtual unknown. peter davison, already a television star in england, portrayed a much younger doctor in a cricket blazer, with more subtle humor and a touch of irascibility.

"logopolis" marked the end of an era. it was the last appearance of tom baker, the longest serving doctor in the history of "doctor who", and also the first of his successor peter davison who appears in the final regeneration scene. it also marked the arrival of two new companions aboard the tardis, janet fielding as the australian airline stewardess tegan jovanka and sarah sutton as the trakenian princess nyssa.
