Mobile suit gundam: char’s counterattack was created to serve as the finale in the ongoing rivalry between notable universal century mecha pilots char aznable and amuro ray, as the former now leads the remnants of the neo-zeon faction and plots to launch a meteor into the earth to trigger an ice age on the planet in defiance of the earth federation. this being said, i strongly recommend viewers watch up on the older gundam titles before watching this movie as it is made in mind for viewers who have watched through mobile suit gundam, zeta gundam, and even gundam zz.for the most part, char’s counterattack does a great job at getting into the heads of char and amuro as the final events leading up to their climactic battle play out. the radical motives that char has planned for earth may seem sudden compared to earlier depictions of his character.

This time, rather than serving as the rival of the new protagonist, kamille bidan, char serves as kamille's mentor in the war against the earth federation's oppressive titans organization. in zeta gundam, char becomes an ally of his former adversaries in mobile suit gundam: amuro ray, hayato kobayashi and bright noa. he serves under bright noa as leader of aeug mobile suit forces.

Amuro was introduced as an ordinary man in contrast to his rival the "red comet". this made amuro hard to write as he was meant to oppose char whom tomino found more interesting. furuya had fun in his work as during recordings of the series, he befriended char's voice actor, shuichi ikeda.

Char aznable returns and we are able to get a deeper look into his character than ever before. behind the man known as the infamous red comet, is someone who is strongly principled and wants to live life on his own terms and no one else. his longtime rival, amuro ray, makes a return and his character arc is perhaps my favorite in the show.

It follows the exploits of amuro ray, a 13-year old refugee on a spaceship and is suddenly made an acting member of crew because of his natural ability to pilot the government's new weapon...the gundam!! !throughout the series, amuro faces off against the baddest name for the baddest group of badies in the whole f****** universe....the principality of zeon. kycilla, garma and dozle zabi all run zeon, whilst the original heir, char aznable works them from the inside, and whilst char is not the villain of this story, his tragic backstory and romance with lala sune turns his anti-hero character into tritary antagonist.
